Factors that may influence the decision include the time available, the presence of a working epidural, the mother's previous experience, the likely duration of surgery, and the presence of maternal pathology especially cardiac, neurological, or previous back surgery. While such factors are often considerations, usually the technique used is entirely due to anesthetist preference.
