Localized Corrosion Failure of Steel Reinforcement in Concrete Field Examples of the Problem

The volume of literature discussing the corrosion of steel in concrete is extensive. From that large body of work there is only a modest portion that provides discussion of localized corrosion of steel reinforcement in concrete. This paper provides a discussion of localized corrosion failure of reinforcing steel encountered in the field, how such problems were identified and how the situations were corrected. Routine inspections of reinforced concrete structures employ visual inspection and/or sounding techniques to identify reinforcement corrosion. These techniques are good at identifying situations where stress from expansive corrosion products has cracked, delaminated or spalled the concrete covering the distressed reinforcement. It is the author's experience that these standard techniques are not similarly effective with situations where localized corrosion has severely damaged reinforcing steel without spalling or delaminating the concrete.
