Intravenous access can be difficult to achieve not only in infants and children with severe shock or cardiac arrest but also in adults during emergency situations such as multiple trauma and severe burns. The resulting delay in obtaining this access can compromise the effectiveness of therapy. As an alternative, the intraosseous access into the noncollapsible bone marrow venous plexus provides a safe and reliable method for rapidly achieving a route for the administration of drugs, fluids and blood products [1].In recent years, intraosseous cannulation has become part of the armamentarium of resuscitation methods and the vascular access via the intraosseal route in emergency situations has been recommended in the meantime by the American Heart Association, the American Academy of Pediatrics and the American College of Surgeons, when the insertion of a venous access is not immediately possible [2-4]. So it seems that the method of intraosseal infusions is a newly developed technique.
