GREEN CITIES IN HUNGARY

In Hungary, 236 cities were registered at January 1, 2001, which involve 65.7 % of the country's population. Environmental quality in cities - along with housing, traffic conditions, air quality, public green area per capita, etc. - is important to the quality of life.The aim of the study was to rank and classify Hungarian cities according to their environmental quality and level of environmental awareness. To answer this task, the "Green Cities Index" was calculated that ranks cities on many different environmental criteria (Cutter, S.L., 1992; Kerenyi, A., 1995).
