We have introduced the ADMITS project (Adaptation in Distributed Multimedia IT Systems) which builds an experimental distributed multimedia system for investigations into adaptation. Besides treating adaptation as a global issue, the major distinguishing feature of our approach is that (MPEG-conforming) meta-data are used to steer the adaptation processes in components on the delivery path to the client (e.g., proxies, routers). We recently proposed a generic bitstream syntax description (gBSD) for the DIA process in MPEG-21. The rational is to carry out the adaptation on the (XML-) descriptions rather than on the bitstream. Currently we are working for the inclusion of gBSD in the forthcoming MPEG-21 Reference Software. Work in progress includes the use of offensive adaptation with the help of a virtual video server.
