Four-year CMV Serologic Profile of Multitransfused Patients (Beta-Thalassaemia Major) in Western Greece

The purpose of this study was to determine the serologic profile of niultitransfused patients (MTP) with beta-thalassaemia major in Western Greece in regard to CMV transmitted by transfusions. Equal blood sera of MTP were studied: 60 for 1998, 60 for 1999, 61 for 2000, 61 for 2001 and 61 in Feb. 2002. Assays were performed by ELISA (IMX-system) and ELFA (Vidas-system). Multitransfused thalassemic patients have a higher incidence of CMV: 63,3% (1998, 1999) and 64% (2000, 2001, 20002) IgG (+) anti-CMV in comparison to the 40,75% observed in the healthy population of the same age range. The incidence of CMV amongst these patients is apparently dependent of age (repeated transfusions). Preventive techniques primarily: leukapheresis and secondly: storing the blood for 48 hrs and screening donors for CMV.
