NO{sub}X Emission Rates from Oxy-Fuel Oil Flames

The influence of various parameters on the NO{sub}X emission rates from a flame have been experimentally investigated. The parameters studied are: nature of the fluid used for the fuel atomization, ratio between the atomization fluid and fuel mass flow rates, geometry of the burner port, geometry of the quarl, overall oxygen excess index, volumetric rate of heat release by the flame and nitrogen content in the fuel. The results allowed interesting insights on the contributions of the thermal and fuel bounded nitrogen for the total emission rates. In addition, the influence of the nitrogen content on the fuel bounded nitrogen conversion efficiency could be better understood. Finally, it has been observed that, despite the high temperatures and oxygen concentrations found in oxy-fuel flames, equivalent and even lower NO{sub}X emissions can be achieved from these flames when compared with similar ones using air as oxidant.
