Techno-Economic Comparison of Different Processes for Fuel Production Based on Sewage Sludge

This paper summarizes the results of a study (Sowa, 1994) comparing technically and economically processes for producing fuels from pure sewage sludge and from coal/sewage sludge mixtures. It describes the respective processes and includes furthermore estimations of the investment, production and operating costs for the processes. Some typical examples for fuel production from sewage sludge and coal/sludge mixtures have been selected. With a view to the different combustion processes (e.g. fluidised bed and entrained flow combustion) this includes: ·production of a wet sewage sludge filter cake from the chamber filter press carburized with a coal suspension ·drying of the pure sewage sludge or coal/sewage sludge mixtures granulation of the sewage sludge with coal and lime (for, among other things, direct desulphurisation, odour reduction, disinfection). These processes are compared and evaluated with regard to their technical and economic aspects.
