An experimental study has been carried out to determine the heat transfer characteristics of solid-liquid fluidized bed using low specific weight particles. By using low specific weight particles, the flow direction of the fluidized bed can be made opposite to that of ordinary fluidized bed. Furthermore, there may be some merits of decreasing the fluidization power by using the water level difference. In the present study, a bundle of horizontal heated tube was immersed in the fluidized bed which was formed by both downward forced flow of water and low specific weight particles. The effect of flow velocity, particle diameter, and thermophysical properties of particles on the heat transfer characteristics were extensively determined. It was found that diameter and density of particles exerted considerable effects on the heat transfer performance.
