A low cost solution for a brushless permanent magnet motor (BPM) drive with single-phase input targeting home appliance applications is proposed. A detailed discussion about the simulation of the proposed drive system is presented. A MATLAB(R) program is developed to simulate the overall motor drive system. A closed loop speed control strategy is developed and simulated. The proposed motor drive system has been fabricated and tested in the laboratory for its performance. The system uses a low cost digital signal processor that drastically reduces the chip count on the board and helps in further cost reduction. The proposed system has desired features such as, four-quadrant operation, high reliability with a reasonably good power factor at higher torque and lack of current sensors. The experimental results to verify the performance of the proposed drive are presented.
