CHARACTERISATION OF A MULTI USE SITE ― UPDATE ON PROGRESS AT AWE

For more than 50 years, AWE Aldermaston has been involved in the research, design, development and manufacture of warheads for the United Kingdom's nuclear deterrent. Before that, the site was a military airfield that played a vital role in Allied air operations during World War II. Past operations were carried out to standards that were appropriate at the time but those standards would be considered unacceptable today. As a result, while the site remains essentially safe and standards today are very high, there are a number of legacy issues that must be addressed using modern practices. This describes how we are investigating legacy issues, the scope of the work currently proceeding and our plans for the future.
