PREOPERATIVE PATIENT PREPARATION

Preoperative patient preparation extends beyond just clipping and performing an antimicrobial soap scrub of the surgical site. Microbiological contamination can be reduced by proper preparation of the operating room, surgical instrumentation, personnel, and perhaps most importantly that the patient is in the best physiological condition to respond to contamination and infection. Good surgical technique requires aseptic surgery as realistically feasible. Healthy patients can cope with infections muchbetter that ill patients, particularly in coping with the systemic responses to local infections. As older and more diseased patients are operated in a practice, the requirements for greater emphasis on asepsis increases.
