Upper respiratory function after surgery

Members of the internal medicine service often evaluate horses with the complaint of poor performance. The history of upper respiratory noise and poor performance, physical examination, resting endoscopic examination of the upper airway and perhaps treadmill evaluation of the upper airway may lead to a diagnosis of upper respiratory tract obstruction. Treatment of many obstructive syndromes can involve surgery. The following proceeding notes will discuss the common upper respiratory obstructive diseases, potential surgical options, post-operative treatment, potential complications, and prognosis for performance.
