EFFECT OF VACCINATION AGAINST LEPTOSPIRA INTERROGANS SEROVAR BRATISLAVA ON FERTILITY OF SWINE IN A COMMERCIAL HERD IN FRANCE

In many countries Leptospira interrogans serovar bratislava is known to cause reproductive failure in early gestation (1). Some countries have adopted vaccination to control it. Vaccination against Leptospira interrogans serovar bratislava. has provenits efficiency to improve the farrowing rate of swine in a split-herd vaccination trial in USA (3). In Australia, vaccination against serovar bratislava in a split-herd trial reduced the proportion of stillbirths (4). In France, a serological study showed that herds with good fertility had more seronegative sows for the different leptospira serovars, than herds with poor fertility (2). Many French practitioners have experienced improvements of fertility by using antibiotics in swine herds where there was a presumption of leptospirosis based on serological results. Anyway, it has not been possible yet to perform a direct diagnosis by isolation of Leptospira from swine in France. Moreover there is no stock vaccine available for swine leptospirosis in this country.
