In this paper the analysis of an experimental test campaign to characterize the heat transfer and pressure drop through a Brazed Plate Heat Exchanger and a Tube and Fins Coil is presented, for two different refrigerants, R22 and propane. The heat exchangers were tested using an air to water reversible heat pump with a nominal refrigeration capacity of 20 kW in the range of application of Air Conditioning systems, i.e. 12 to 7°C on the water side for Cooling Mode in summer conditions (evaporator), and 45 to 50°C for Heating Mode ha winter conditions (condenser). A discussion of the results, mainly focused to explain the differences in behavior between R22 and propane is given. Finally a set of conclusions, concerning the differences in behavior between both refrigerants, is included.
