Outcomes of recent deliberations by international agencies on the safety of genetically modified organisms (GMOs)

The role and significance of international agencies on the safety of genetically modified organisms (GMOs) has grown considerably within the past few years. Reports, conferences and working papers published in the past year only will be reported here. An example of their input and cooperation is seen in the following list of organizations working on the: The first session was held in Chiba, Japan in March 2000. The following intergovernmental organizations were invited to contribute to the elaboration of standards, guidelines, and other principles, as appropriate in evaluating the safety and nutrition aspects of foods derived from biotechnology: Food and Agricultural Organization of the United Nations (FAO); World Health Organization (WHO); World Trade Organization (WTO); United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO); International Center for Genetic Engineering and Biotechnology (ICGEB); Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD); United Nations Environmental Programme (UNEP); Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD); Office International des Epizooties (OIE).
