Carbon nanotubes (CNTs) and nanofibers (CNFs) with certain shape, size and structure are desired. The study of the kinetics of nucleation and growth of the nanotubes is an important key to understand the nucleation and growth processes. That knowledge will greatly improve our capacity to optimize structural shapes and increase growth rates. In a lower temperature catalytic environment, octopus carbon offers evidence of the role of geometry, pentagon formation "catalysis" and catalyst duality: a) Gas decomposition by surface catalysis in certain areas; b) Carbon nucleation/growth in other areas (emphasizing the role of metals with orthorhombic carbides).
