Cochannel interference and multipath propagation reduce the ability of mobile communication systems. Multi-input MLSE with whitening processing can mitigate the influence of the interference and provide the path diversity gain. In conventional consideration, however the number of required computations rapidly rises with that of the array elements. We propose novel multi-input MLSE whitening error signals in the signal space by using a multibeam adaptive array. This scheme is intended to reduce the computational load than that of the conventional type in the case using a large-element array. An analytical result shows that the proposed type and conventional type are equivalent in the sense of the metric. Computer simulations also prove it and show the reduced complexity of the proposed type.
