Certain polariser-free reflective liquid crystal display technologies offer the prospect of high reflectivity and adequate contrast. Recent developments in light scattering and dichroic systems are reviewed. Particular emphasis is given to a novel stacked cell technology that demonstrates the highest combination of contrast and reflectivity yet reported for an achromic display. The achievment of satisfactory diffuse reflection characteristics without degrading visual performance by back scatter from the display is also addressed.
