A STUDY ON THE SOCIAL AND PHYSICAL CHARACTERISTICS OF KAMPUNG LUAR BATANG, SUNDA KELAPA, JAKARTA

摘要

This paper based on field survey on kampung conducted in January 2002. The term of kampung is used here as a unique indigenous settlement that has its own system and a tradition and which is not necessarily a slum. As a settlement that formed and developed since 17th century, Kampung Luar Batang constitutes one of the oldest indigenous settlements in Jakarta. It left artifacts such as a sacred mosque and a tomb and also has unique character of settlement pattern and traditional houses. The role and location of Kampung Luar Batang in constellation of Jakarta are closely related to the existence of historic area of Sunda Kelapa and Old Jakarta that has a potential to be developed as main tourism destination. This paper reveals the origin of Kampung Luar Batang and portrays its profiles and characteristics. The study also examines and incorporates the unique kampung life and culture.
