Multi-channel electromyography and subjective methods for the evaluation of the ergonomic quality of hand-held tools and computer input devices

Electromyography enables the measurement of the intensity of muscle exertions which are demanded when working with hand-held tools and controls as well as when performing repetitive manual movements. Utilizing multi-channel recording devices, physiological responses of those muscles involved in work can be quantified in figures and numbers, whereby more or less ergonomically designed tools lead to different physiological costs associated with work. A computer-based system was developed for the competent application of electromyography which requires differentiated and detailed knowledge of the possibilities and limitations of the technique as well as a substantial amount of experience. This system provides information and guidance throughout all steps of an experimental study - from the design of an investigation through the final assessment of the results. Together with expert ratings and subjective assessments of the various criteria of working tools, and via specifying the subjects' physical condition associated with work after standardized working tests, the ergonomic quality of hand-held tools can be evaluated, which is now even a legal requirement in Europe.
