Bacterial contamination of raw bulk milk of sheep and goats

Consumption of raw milk of sheep and goats and their products can be a serious health risk. The aim of this study was to investigate raw bulk milk of sheep and goats concerning total bacterial counts, counts of coliforms and Staphylococcus aureus, Streptococcus B and Salmonella spp. and the presence of new emerging pathogens (Campylobacter jejuni, Listeria monocytogenes, Yersinia enterocolitica and verotoxin producing E. coli O157 (EHEC). This study was carried out in 13 sheep and 2 mixed sheep andgoal farms. Sampling was done fortnightly over a lactation period in 1996. Streptococcus B., Salmonella spp., L. monozytogenes, C. jejuni and E. coli O157 have not been isolated in the bulk milk. Y. enterocolitica was detected in sheep and goat milk produced on one farm.
