A perfect colour rendition CRI of a light source at a given colour temperature CCT requires a spectral distribution which is proportional to the shape of the black body radiation of this temperature in the visible spectral range. This may be realized by the radiation of solid surfaces in incandescent lamps for a CCT up to 3000 K. The main disadvantage of this is the poor efficacy. At higher temperatures, the use of cluster radiation with a very smooth spectral distribution was proposed. However, the development of such systems is complicated due to the necessity that the discharge lamp is operated electrodeless using a microwave excitation. The radiation distribution of metal hali-de lamps is typically characterized by an optimized pseudocontinuum of spectral lines showing gaps and pronounced maxima which lead to colour distortions of the illuminated objects.
