Environmental legislations have been enacted inIndia during the last two decades or so with a view to protect theenvironment and ensuring its continued sustainability. Thepresent paper highlights synoptically the salient features of thedifferent laws in force in India for protection of environmentand ecology in pre-independence and post independence eraincluding important laws related to mineral industry. It alsodeals with important federal USA laws for comparison. Theinadequacies of environmental laws in India vis-a- vis the USAlaws are presented.
