Application of Light Hydrocracked Base Oils for Automatic Transmission Fluids

This study investigates the effects of light hydrocracked base oils on automatic transmission fluid (ATF) performance. A dumbbell blending approach was applied in the formulation of several ATF fluids containing light hydrocracked base oils. The study included a comparison of ATF formulations blended from a straight cut reference base oil with those produced by blending light and heavy base oils from the same slate. The benefits and limitations of light hydrocracked base oils on ATF fluids are discussed. Additionally, improvements in the low temperature viscometrics of ATF by severely dewaxing light hydrocracked base oils are also discussed.
