Western Yunnan is characterized by a complicated and long ranging geodynamic evolution. In recent years interest centered on the question where and when terrenes of possible Gondwana origin were accreted to the proven continental crust of the Yangtze Platform. In this contribution published data on the sedimentary evolution of Western Yunnan from Carboniferous to Jurassic times are reviewed critically and new own data on Carboniferous and Permian fossils and sediments, which are strongly climatically controlled, are added. The geological evolution of Western Yunnan will be compared with the adjacent geological units of Northern Thailand.
