In Memory of Professor Peter Misch

Peter Misch (1908-1987) was born in Berlin, Germany and received a Ph. D. in geology at Goettingen in 1933. Following teaching at Goettingen, and geologic studies in the Alps, Pyrenees and Himalayas, he migrated to China where he taught and carried out geologic field studies through the World War II years. After the war he went to U. S. A., accepting a professorship at the University of Washington in 1948, where he served as a teacher until 1980 and remained active as Emeritus Professor until his death. His legacy to science includes pioneering geologic studies in west Yunnan, China, and in the North Cascades of Washington State and in Great Basin region, U. S. A., and the training of more than 100 M. S. and Ph.D. students whom he supervised. His example lives on in the work of many outstanding geologists whom he trained both in China and in U.S.A.
