Microstructural banding can be measured quantitatively by manual methods using ASTM E-1268. Various stereological parameters can be determined from these measurements. Similar parameters can be measured or derived by using automated image analysis systems. Pearlitic steel specimens previously evaluated by ASTM committee E-04 were analyzed by automatic image analysis. Several high speed steel specimens were evaluated. Comparisons between manual and automated measurements are discussed.
