The renewed determination of the equal-loudness level contours showed considerable differences in the results of different laboratories. Though all new results show the uniform tendency to lie above the standard values of ISO226, theinvestigations yield different results under apparently same methods. For measuring equal-loudness level contours it is recommended to use the method of constant stimulus, hence in this paper only results obtained using this method are respected.Birgitta Gabriel has shown, that the different findings could be attributed to differences in the experimental context. Particularly the judgments of the subject depend on the level range of the test- tones and on the frequency distance between test- andreference-tone. This so-called range-effect' was first discovered and systematically investigated by Gabriel [1]. The effect could be explained in a first approximation by a simple adaptation model [2]. However the aim to minimize the variances ofdifferent laboratories could not be reached. Thus the model is explored in the following more closely and its requirements and limitations are discussed.
