A method for the fabrication of dense yttrium aluminum garnet (YAG) fibers and mechanical properties of the fibers is described. Dense YAG fibers had room temperature strength of 577 + - 89 MPa and a. Weibull modulus of 7.4. The creep activation energy of these fibers was estimated to be about 620 kJ/mol. Dense YAG fibers were fabricated by the sintering of green fiber extruded from mixture of thermoplastic polymer and YAG powder. Very fine particle size high purity YAG powder, which readily crystallized at 1000 deg C, was synthesized via combustion synthesis from chemical precursors - yttrium and aluminum nitrates and glycine.
