Insufficient supply with nutrients and lackingbioavailability are main reasons for slow and incompletebiodegradation in contaminated soils. Continuous mixing of thesoil in solid state bioreactors can solve these problems.Processing the soil at the optimum moisture content forbiological activity to get maximum yield out of the energy inputunfortunately implicates that the soil tends to agglomeration. Sosimultaneous mechanical treatment for desagglomeration isnecessary. Short periods of strong mechanical stress followed bycontinuous smooth mixing which can be realized in rotatingdrum reactors with grinding beads or silo reactors effectivelyincrease microbial remediation.
