Flotation, used here for separating PVC and PETwaste before recycling, is based on natural or induceddifferences in the wetting properties of materials. Because thesurface of plastics is hydrophobic, it is necessary to selectivelyrender one of them hydrophilic. A study was carried out of thebehaviour of PVC and PET during grinding in different mills, ofsurface morphology (by SEM) after grinding, and of chemistry(by FTIR). Suitable reagents were selected with the help of ore-processing laboratory equipment modified for this purpose.Efficient separation was obtained.
