The natural evolution of implantable devices has trended to the proliferation of external programmers to reconfigure the implants. When initially introduced 20 years ago, together with the telemetry for communicate, they were hailed as marvels of technology. Today they are seen as anachronism embodying obsolete technologies that have turned every physicians office into a museum and physicians into archaeologists. This discussion touches on the main limitations of these programmers together with the telemetry they use.
