摘要

Traffic congestion is one of the most significant problems in large cities, especially during peak hours. Urban traffic lights scheduling optimization plays an important role to overcome traffic jams. In this paper an empirical study was performed to minimize the average waiting time and the average queue length in two consecutive intersections by finding the optimum green/red percentages and cycle time combination. Different experiments were tested using a simulation model which has been built using ARENA software. The significant factors affecting the traffic lights performance which were studied and the best combination between them discovered using design of experiment and analysis of variance techniques. Testing the performance of different green/red percentages and cycle time was performed on the case study, and their optimal combination to reduce the congestion of the network under study was identified.
