Causes of cancellation on the ophthalmic ambulatory surgery at West China hospital Sichuan university

The purpose of this study was to determine the cancellation rate and reason of day operation in the Outpatient Eye Surgery Center (OASC) of West China Hospital of Sichuan University (WHC), and to propose appropriate solutions. A retrospective study was conducted to include all patients who planned to undergo surgery at OASC from June 2016 to December 2018. A total of 23,341 surgical cases were evaluated. The results showed that the cancellation rate was 10.2%, representing 2,382 cases. Factors related to the patient's physical condition are unavoidable (52.1%), such as colds, high blood pressure, high blood sugar, inflammation and menstruation. The avoidable rate was 47.9%. Patients needed to be rescheduled, patients abandoned treatment, were unable to contact patients, had completed surgery and were not adequately prepared before surgery. Studies show that more than 80 percent of cancellations are due to patients not showing up. Mobile healthcare applications can improve patient health knowledge, compliance and service satisfaction. At the same time, it can reduce the cancellation rate, reduce the cost of medical institutions, improve the efficiency of operation and management.
