The relationship between strain rate and fragmentation of aluminum targets under impact loading is investigated. Dynamic deformation and fragmentation of the target surface are observed using a high-speed digital framing camera. The digital images obtained reveal local displacement (bulging) of the target surface, and local strain rates are obtained through time-sequential displacement. Fragmentation resulting from pronounced displacement is also found. In addition, the dynamic processes from bulging to fragmentation are discussed.
