The introduction of noise into an evolutionary iterated prisoner'sdilemma model can promote the evolution of strategy memory. In thispaper, an analysis in terms of Ashby's (1956) law of requisite varietyenables a distinction to be drawn between the adaptive evolution ofmemory and non-adaptive evolution, or drift, a distinction which, insuch situations, is remarkably insensitive to fitness statistics. Aspart of this, it is demonstrated how the influence of noise can dependon its locus in the evolving system. Additional evidence is presentedfor a second influence of noise in facilitating drift, an influencewhich can be interpreted in terms of noise-induced genotype-phenotypedegeneracy
