The paper examines inter-organizational reciprocal task interdependencies that take place duringa BIM based design and construction process. These interdependencies are analyzed through two case studiesapplying an action research approach and the SimLab? process development method. We identify four subprocesseswhere reciprocal interdependence between different organizations occurs: defining requirements forthe building, integrating the different design models into a BIM model, BIM model change management, andenergy simulations. Reciprocal interdependence is coordinated by mutual adjustment,which is the most expensivecoordination mode. We argue that the current amount of reciprocally interdependent tasks can be reduced byincreasing level of standardization through deploying four steps: define goals for BIM usage, ensure differentparticipants possess capabilities to attain goals for BIM usage, ensure participants’ willingness to cooperate,and create shared objectives for the design and performance of the building. We argue that the deployment ofthese steps reduces uncertainty in the process, which enables higher levels of standardization and thereby moreeffective coordination.
