The use of a phase independent thyristor-controlled reactor (TCR)compensator to balance asymmetrical loads is a well-known subject.However, if the control strategy is based on balanced supply voltageconditions and if this does not occur the required compensation may failor it can exhibit inaccuracy. A new formulation to evaluate thenecessary TCR phase susceptances under unbalanced voltage conditions isproposed. By using this technique, computational investigations andpractical discussions are carried out to establish a comparison to theclassical method results. The discrepancies between the two approacheswith reference to the degree of asymmetry are highlighted
