This paper presents a novel multi-band plenoptic pyrometer that instantaneously and robustly measures 2D temperature distributions. The present research evaluates the multi-band plenoptic pyrometer's efficacy in capturing spectral content and temperatures in a solid rocket strand burner plume. Temperature calculations are based on spectral pyrometry using Wien's distribution law. The temperature measurements captured by the multi-band plenoptic are compared to a thermocouple placed within the flame. Two fuels are compared: the first fuel is comprised of 60% ammonium perchlorate (AP) and 40% hydroxyl-terminated polybutadiene (HTPB), and second is 60% AP, 30% HTPB, and 10% aluminum (Al). Preliminary experiments were conducted with an atmospheric strand burner with biased flow. Initial results demonstrate instantaneously captured 2D temperature maps with accuracy comparable to the reference thermocouple, with both showing an increase of over 300°C for the case with AL added. The dynamic range in temperature was determined to be around 800°C.
