Model Test Research of Low-speed Vessel on Gas Film Drag Reduction

The paper investigates the gas film drag reduction of low-speedvessel based on model test. The numerical simulation determines theeffective injection parameters. The model test was conducted in fourdifferent injection position combinations, five different towingvelocities and four different injection flow rates. The comparisonbetween the test with and without air injection shows the injectiondecreases the total drag of vessel model evidently, especially aroundthe design speed. The best drag reduction can reach 15.5% at designspeed when the three injections were applied together and each nondimensionalinjection flow rate was 0.115. The injection direction in 40degree with water flow doesn’t change the floating state of the model.The research results provide the basis for application of gas film dragreduction to the low-speed full-scale vessel.
