Wrinkle-free function on cotton can be achieved by crosslinking cotton cellulose with different agents. Dimethylol-dihydroxylethyeleneurea (DMDHEU) has been the most effective agent for decades, but release of formaldehyde from the treated fabrics have become a human health issue. Replacement of DMDHEU by polycarboxylic acids such as 1,2,3,4-butanetetracarboxylic acid (BTCA) and 3,3',4,4',-benzophenone tetracarboxylic acid (BPTCA) have been tested as potential agents. However, after further investigation on the reactions of polycarboxylic acids with cellulose, we believe citric acid has unique features to be considered as an alternative. This presentation will illustrate our latest findings of using citric acid as a potential durable press finishing agent for cotton fabrics.
