Ammonia and 2,5-dimethylpyrazine (2,5-DMP) were the dominant chemicals present in area air samples and the denim jeans headspace analysis. The combination of ammonia and 2,5-DMP is acting together to create the fetid odor with an odor character different from the individual components. That is, the sensory perception of a mixture of odorants is very different from how each component is perceived independently (AIHA, 2013). Microbial degradation of in-service metalworking fluids can result in the release of odiferous compounds. Proper management of process fluids and waste oils is necessary to prevent spoilage due to microbial degradation of fluids.
