The Santa Cruz County Groundwater Recharge Project demonstrates the effectiveness of stormwater LIDs for infiltrating stormwater runoff to recharge groundwater Although there is mounting evidence that bioretention and infiltration basins (gravel seepage pits) can reduce runoff to overburdened waterways, improve runoff quality, attenuate peak flows, and reduce the potential for hydromodification of receiving waterways, the implementation of bioretention and deep rock gravel seepage pits has yet to be proven an effective method for groundwater recharge. In order to demonstrate the effectiveness of these LID features, bioretention swales have been installed to pretreat stormwater runoff prior to entering 30 foot deep rock gravel seepage pits at two locations in a county public park. Ongoing groundwater monitoring is being used to evaluate the efficacy of using bioretention and deep rock infiltration methods to recharge local groundwater in areas where aquifer overdrafting, collapse, and saltwater intrusion are occurring.
