HClear™ Program: A Solution-Based Approach to HCl Abatement

Fuel Tech's Program relies on the injection of an aqueous solution that decomposes to form small particles that react with gaseous HCl in combustion gas streams. The as-formed particles selectively react with gaseous HCl, and form a chloride-containing particle that is removed by particulate control devices. Owing to high efficiency of the new program and low dose rates relative to dry sorbents, the chloride-containing particles removed by particulate control devices have little impact on the fly ash. The use of a proprietary sorbent that is highly selective for HCl, used in this program, minimized the balance-of-plant issues associated with dry sorbent injection, such as heavy metals leaching from fly ash ponds or landfills. Additionally, the new program does not impact or interfere with standard mercury removal technologies, and does not impact mass loading on particulate control devices. As such, the technologies used in this new program is effective at reducing HCl concentrations in combustion gas streams, with no impact on standard treatment technologies for compliance with MATS and/or Boiler MACT.
