The type of lubricant and mix used in the production of PM components plays a crucial role for the practically achievable density and subsequent mechanical properties. With more efficient lubricants, lower amounts are required to achieve lubrication that ensures good part surface quality and acceptable tool wear. One method to further decrease the amount of lubricant, is to use higher compaction temperatures in combination with lubricants and mixes optimized for higher temperatures. The types of lubricant and mix also have a major influence on the quality of the pressed parts in terms of weight scatter and productivity. This paper presents a benchmark of different lubricant and mix types, including achievable density, ejection performance, weight scatter and productivity.
