Stator core deterioration and failure modes

Stator cores have historically required minor but common maintenance. Major failures do occur and occasionally catastrophic meltdown. This paper will review basic design features and components of cores, and then each of these types of core incidents will be discussed. It should be commented at the outset, however, that of the many components of a central power station generator, the core may be the least well understood. The core is deceptively simple in construction, but complicated in the extreme in its magnetic, mechanical and electrical duties - and in the diverse ways it can fail[1].
