Compound Disturbance Rejection Control for Wastewater Treatment Processes

Dissolved oxygen concentration is an important parameter in wastewater treatment processes, since it directly determines the quality of effluent water. Considering that the wastewater treatment is a complex process, and it is difficult to establish an accurate model, control approaches that do not rely on accurate mathematical models and are robust enough to various disturbances are in great need. Therefore, a compound disturbance rejection control composed of an extended state observer (ESO) and a sliding mode control is proposed to keep the DO concentration be in a desired level. The benchmark simulation model No.1 (BSM1) is taken to simulate wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs). Numerical results are presented to confirm the approach.
