A wide range of surface and microscopy techniques are available for characterizing battery materials. For production monitoring, bulk analysis techniques such as GDMS offer a powerful capability for surveying impurities in electrode materials. GDMS has the lowest routinely available detection limit. Full compositional analysis of raw materials is achieved by using GDMS for impurities with ICP for providing composition of major components. Analytical techniques are used for failure analysis and cell development studies, in addition, they are also used to monitor materials for controlling battery manufacturing processes.
