As electronically controlled marine engines have become more complex, the knowledge base for service has largely outpaced traditional capabilities. Field technicians can troubleshoot, but the complete repair process is heavily dependent upon multi-layer, specialized groups with increasing technical knowledge and authority. This multi-layer communication structure, (person to person), is inherently flawed, which leads to inefficiency, lost time and unneeded costs. Telematics changes the communication structure by electronically sending real-time accurate data directly from the engine' control module (ECM) over GPRS cellular or satellite networks via a secure web-based protocol to an individual or group best equipped to understand, diagnose and have authority to ensure an accountable, speedy redeployment of that boat. Marine engines ECM's utilize J1939CAN, NMEA2000, Smartcraft or other CAN bus networks, which broadcast standardized engines data such as running hours, engine speed, engine temperature, as well as proprietary data, including diagnostic error messages. There are significant potential cost savings, increased efficiencies, and mission readiness capabilities associated with the use of telematics, which include: 1.Eliminating the cost of first service call (man hours, logistics, and down-time). 2.Insuring that correct parts are available when the technician repairs/services the engine. 3.Prevent costly repairs through advanced knowledge of impending failure. 4.Helps ensure complete and accurate service is completed. 5.Permits new product deployment into field with greater accountability. 6.Acquisition team to plan better buying of parts and engines. 7.Strategic planning, fleet management. 8.Engine performance trends.
